Chapter 12 – Asking Questions

They finally hit solid road and Kirsty and Luce could breath a sigh of relief. Though still in wolf form, they no longer had to bounce around and skid around the back of the truck. Hopefully it would be a smooth ride to the closest town and motel. Trey had gone ahead to fine somewhere for them to hide, or sleep or what ever. Somewhere to wash and all those essential things.
Lolling on her side and drifting in between sleep and dreaming when the truck pulled to a stop and Trey’s auburn head came bobbing at the end of the truck. She sat up slowly, feeling needles run down her back. Kirsty had no idea how long they had been driving for, or even how long she’d been in this form for. But she wanted a shower, and clothes, and sleep and to do at least two of them she needed to change back. Trey said something to her and she didn’t understand a word, but jumped down from the truck followed by Luce instead. She padded around a little, sniffing the air and strolling around, getting her footing on the hard ground. She watched as Trey led Leon and the new guy to a door just to the left of the front of the truck, they disappeared into the room and Ludi and Luce took the next room to the left of theirs. The one of the right Trey stepped into and she followed, almost bouncing with joy as she went into the room and skidded into the bathroom, nudging the door shut with her nose and stretching out.
She let her breath shudder out and felt her fur retract into her skin, her bones move and re set, muscles twist and go to different places and soon she lay on the cool bathroom floor, fully human, the wound on her shoulder weeping a little but still not healed as much as she wanted. Pulling herself up using the sink she stared at her rather grubby completion. Reaching for the shower tap she turned to it the hottest it would go and ran her hand under it a little. She stepped back, examining her body. Small scratched and slightly deeper cuts covers her stomach, but they where nearly healed, only a little Wolfsbane in those ones. Bruises on her thighs where fading away and the rest was pure perfection that Kirsty was. She heard a knock on the slightly ajar door and Trey’s head poked around it. He smiled and went to step in, but Kirsty’s hand on the door stopped him, pinning him to the door frame, half in half out,
‘Hey- ‘he started and she shook her head,
‘I want a shower,’ she said simply and he shrugged, disappearing back into the main motel room. It was a fairly tacky motel, big bed, which groaned as Trey threw himself onto it, small TV, which crackled to life as Trey turned that on. She shut the door and locked it, leaning against the back of it for a moment, and then striding towards the shower and clambering in. the water was hot, extremely hot. The type of hot that would scold, but she stood under it like it was heaven. It beat down against her skin, bouncing off and rolling down. Kirsty had no idea how long she just stood there with the water running down her body, before she actually reached for soap and began to wash.
As she did she though of what would happen when she got back to Stone Haven, would she kill Nathaniel for a betrayal before he was even pack, or just beat him enough and throw him into the cage. Then she remembered the cage had been torn apart by Simon. That made her think, Simon had been a black wolf,
‘Oh I’d thank a little black wolf for that information,’
Nathaniel wasn’t that little, he was bulky even for his age, well he looked young so he must have been young. Simon was a lot smaller, slimmer and agile. But she still didn’t know. Due to stopping to think Kirsty had squeezed the soap a little too tight and now it had finger indents in its surface. Chucking it onto the floor of the bath tub, she then concentrated on pouring two slightly scented cheap motel shampoo onto her long red hair and rubbing it till she though it was clean.
15 minutes later she stepped out of the bathroom, a large baby blue motel towel wrapped around her middle. She could see Trey anywhere, but found a pile of clothes, around her size, laid out on the large squishy motel bed. She tugged them on over her newly clean skin and began to rub her hair till only the ends where wet. The room door creaked and she looked up, Ludi, Luce and Trey all came in, each with an armful of nice sugary goods. As they dropped them onto the bed, Kristy grabbed the closest Dr. Pepper can and popped it open, downing half of it within seconds. She licked her lips and wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, flopping onto the edge of the bed and looking up at Trey,
‘So what’s going on at home?’ she asked, rubbing her shoulder lightly. Trey sat at the other end of the bed as Ludi sat on the floor, propping her back against the cabinet that held the TV, Luce sat in one of the wicker chairs that was in the room,
‘When I left nothing, Nathaniel wasn’t too good he –‘
‘Is going to dye, or at least feel some sort of pain. While i was in there –‘Kirsty swallowed and grabbed a bag of crisps, ripping the top off and dipping her hand in, ‘- Perry said something about thanking a black wolf for knowing where we were,’
‘But it could have been Simon,’ Ludi said from the floor, kicking the edge of the bed to have some of the food fall onto the floor for her to eat,
‘Yes but we’ll never know now, not that you killing him was a bad idea. I should have done it long ago,’ Trey said, quickly getting rid of the frown on Kirsty’s face. Luce sat in her corner; frown on her face, thinking hard,
‘Well Leon and Kaze, the other guy, where in that place a lot longer then us. If we take them back with us they could tell us if Nathaniel was there before us. And if they say no then its obviously Simon,’
‘But they might not have ever seen Nathaniel,’
‘Okay Kirst, why don’t we beat him up till he confesses? What if he wasn’t there, and he’s telling the truth that he has no idea but we still beat him because we don’t believe him,’ Trey said, settling back against the head board of the bed,
‘Well we’ll just have to leave it to Leon and the other guy then? Hmm let them decide whether they are going to tell us if Nathaniel is to be trusted or not? Jesus, I just want to sleep,’ Kirsty said, lying on her side on the bed, flicking the finished crisp packet onto the bed. She looked at Luce, her pack sister, sister Alpha, her best friend and threw a can and a couple of bags of food over to her. Luce smiled as she caught them, starting to eat as the rest did.
Trey didn’t touch the food, rather sipped the can of Coke he had, watching the three women eat. He watched Kirsty more then the rest, feeling the small box in his pocket as she laughed and began to be more relaxed by the second.

After what seemed like an age Luce and Ludi disappeared through the door and back to their own room, taking with them some of what was left of the food leaving Kirsty and Trey alone. As he shut the door, Trey took a deep breath and turned to face Kristy,
‘What’s up with you?’ she asked, frowning at him, ‘your acting all odd,’ she got up from the bed and moved over to him, her bare feet pressing to the off white carpet, she stood in front of him, hands on her hips, eyes narrowed. As he dropped to one knee before her, Kirsty took a step back and swallowed, her hands convulsing into fists, ‘don’t,’ she muttered, but already he was pulling out the small blue velvet box and snapping it open, inside sat a silver ring with a small diamond encrusted into he middle, facing her and shinning brightly,
‘Will you…will you marry me?’ He muttered, his true green eyes gazing up at her and she shook her head,
‘I can’t…I cant Trey, I just can’t,’ she swallowed and watched his face drop a little as he shut the box,
‘I understand. We have to sort things out with the pack first, then maybe,’
‘Yeah maybe then,’ she repeated, stepping around him as he stood and going through the room’s door. As she stepped into the cold night air, she breathed and began to walk till she was around the back of the Motel. Then she began to run. She just ran to think. Ran to try and figure out why he just asked her to marry him.
